History

ESS Manufacturing was formed in August 1993 through Sun Microsystems’ divestiture of its east coast manufacturing operation.  ESS Molding, a significant supplier to the Sun Microsystems facility, was a natural fit to acquire the manufacturing operation.

Since that time, ESS has heavily reinvested in the business and diversified into new markets, technical capabilities, and geographic locations.  With roots in the box build and system integration business, ESS added printed circuit board assembly capabilities to augment its range of services. As the technology boom of the late 1990s came to an end, ESS’s management team made a deliberate decision to diversify into new markets while continuing to serve the computing and communications industry. ESS’s ability and reputation for manufacturing highly complex products in a low volume, high mix environment, along with significant financial investment, enabled the company to successfully enter new markets, such as defense and aerospace, energy, and medical devices.

In a fiercely competitive landscape, many contract manufacturers have reduced their North American footprints and shifted attention and resources to manufacturing operations in Asia and Eastern Europe.  ESS has continued to keep our focus on the high reliability; high complexity manufacturing that is best suited for manufacturing in North America.  In October 2002, ESS increased our North American manufacturing footprint by acquiring manufacturing operations in Barrie and Brampton.  ESS has expanded the capabilities and footprints of these operations since their acquisition to establish ESS as a leader in contract manufacturing of high quality and complex products.

Looking to the future, ESS Manufacturing will continue to be a customer focused organization committed to reinvesting our profits in new technologies, capital equipment, and people in order to maintain our position as a leading electronic manufacturing services provider of complex circuit board assemblies and system integration.
